The Real A-List

In this niche, if you ask most people which blogs you should follow they’ll tell you to follow the “A-List”… generally the big few in this niche with thousands of subscribers.

Some tell you this because they believe you’ll get value from those sites, but I reckon most people read blogs simply because others are, and even though certain ‘big’ blogs may not have any value to them people read them because of this reason.

Here’s my personal “A-list”… where A stands for awesome. These blogs are differing sizes, some have ten subscribers while others go to a few thousand. However, I believe that more often than not the posts on these blogs have value, which is why I read them.

By value, I mean that every single blog on this list has something I’ve learned from them, and I believe that reading them could help make you a better internet marketer. Here’s the list, in no particular order…

Blogger Illustrated – a blog Grizz recommended once and although I only got around to checking it a few days ago, its posts definitely have value to them. Read a few of them and you’ll agree.

The Infopreneur – run by James Richmond. He usually posts about twice a day, and the posts will help you think differently if you read and understand them. Probably one of the most interactive (in terms of comment discussion) websites I’ve seen in this niche too.

Make Money For Beginners – doesn’t really need any introduction on this blog, and although he doesn’t post much there’s still a tonne of valuable information there (skim through the archives, which are much better organized than this site’s ).

ViperChill – did a review about this blog a couple days ago as I stumbled across it and liked it, but again, killer content from someone successful. Check it out.

Int Mktr – Trent Brownrigg’s site. Read the interview to find out more about why should should take heed of the stuff he says.

Lis Sowerbutts – if you do nothing else on her website, go and read the last post. It’ll help you a tonne if you had problems with niches etc.

Hot Blog Tips – blog run by Keith Bloemendaal – some of the posts will help change the way you think about certain things. Anything that causes you to think is awesome in my book (or feed reader, shall we say ).

Michel Fortin – is one of the top marketing copywriters in the world, and his blog has a lot of good information that he’s gotten from experience. Another site that will tweak the way you think about certain things.

Leo Dimilo – internet marketing blog with information derived from online experience (the best kind of information). Again, if you read this site you’ll start to see a few things differently.

Site Sketch 101 – a blog run by Nicholas Cardot, who is a full time infantryman in the US Army. Read a few posts on the site, liked that they were different from posts on most other sites, so I’m recommending him.

Nathan Hangen – a blog with internet marketing views, experiences and so on. Fairly solid content and a decent amount of interaction.

The University Kid – lastly… if you look past a lot of the unimportant dross on this site, there are a few posts that have made me & a few others and will make you money.

I didn’t want to go into too much detail for each blog above as I’m lazy as hell and there are 12 blogs above. A paragraph on each and that’s me all tired out. Nevertheless, I recommend all of them from what I’ve seen so far – some a few days worth, some a couple years worth, and I think that reading them will affect you positively. Visit them all, select a few you like and read them in your feed reader every so often.

I may have forgotten or not even know about other blogs that help people make money / boost their online marketing efforts, so if you know any feel free to mention them in the comments and I/others will check them out.

Trouble Installing WordPress?

Installing WordPress manually is not a hard task, but I might be biased here since I have been doing it for the past three years or so. For someone just starting out on the web and with no technical knowledge whatsoever it could be problematic.

The easiest way to solve this problem is by getting a hosting plan on a company that offers the Fantastico script. That script basically provides a one-click install of many open source software and applications, including WordPress.

Not all hosting companies offer Fantastico, though, and maybe you already signed up on one and can’t change now. For those people there is a new tool called EasyWP Install. It is basically a PHP script that you need to upload to your server and execute by accessing www.yourdomain.com/easywp.php. The script will then download all the WordPress files automatically and put them on your server. After that you will just need to finish the installation by going through the WordPress setup.

The script is obviously free and licensed under the GPL, so check it out.

Before the advent of Twitter, bloggers were generally segregated into two - the elite, high-end bloggers who were mostly full-time bloggers and excelled in their work, and the hobbyist or wannabe bloggers who couldn’t quite ‘get there’.

No longer would you have to spend time commenting on other blogs to get bloggers to notice you and give you a reply. Your brand is either too visible, or not visible enough

You may be scratching your head and wandering if its possible for your brand to be TOO visible. The answer is yes. By having your brand too visible, it leaves little room for people to provide buzz about it. If it is already every where, then why does it need to be more places? It also feels as if the brand is being forced upon its viewers. People like to discover things on their own so they can feel as if they found and bounded with something. If everyone knows about it, there’s nothing special about it any more and the brand will fail miserably.

On the other hand, by giving people too much room to buzz about your product, it could fall off the face of the Earth. You’re depending too heavily on people and their word-of-mouth. It’s important that you place your brands in specific areas that you know will expose it to the right crowd. It’s a tricky game, trying to gauge the perfect amount of interest that you want to build for your brand, and it’s never easy. The first few times you may fail, but eventually you’ll reach an equilibrium where you know your demographic enough to realize how much branding you need to put out there.

You’ve studied your demographic incorrectly

Often times, the result of a bad marketing campaign can be lead directly back to the basics. Studying your demographic. Studying your demographic is often over-looked by the simple marketer simply because they assumed that stereotypes fit. If you’re appealing to the teenage crowd, make sure that your brand appeals directly to them. Don’t make things look complicated or too professional or else they’ll be alienated.

The timing was off

Planning your marketing campaign is extremely important. One aspect that is often over looked is the timing. You have to focus on your demographic and realize when the best and most efficient time is. It can go so far as to breaking it down hourly (when are they online the most?) to seasonal (when do they spend the most money?). Sure your initial thoughts may be to increase marketing in the down time, but I wouldn’t focus on that. Instead, try to increase and multiply your revenue margins according to the time that your demographic is most productive…otherwise you’ve wasted your money.

If you have a blog or a website, when do you update it? Do you update it in the morning when everyone’s driving to rush hour? Or do you post right before lunch hour when everyone is surfing the internet? These are important questions to ask because as a marketer, you must understand when your demographic wants to spend the most time with your brand.

You underestimated yourself

I’ve seen brands fail because their marketing department underestimated where the brand stood in the first place. If buzz about your brand is already happening, don’t ruin it by massively appealing to new-comers. Sure it’s great to have a new crowd, but instead, why not hit on the fact that you’re already being written about? Instead, act as if you’ve been in the game forever and appeal to the more experienced crowd who may just come to your site with all of the buzz.

Underestimating a brand means that you could provide a much more aggressive marketing campaign. If you don’t think your brand is strong enough to with hold the inevitable onslaught of attention, then perhaps you should start back at square one and determine exactly who your demographic is, and where you stand with them.

You’ve used too much jargon

Jargon is nice…if people know what it means. Again, this mistake can be tied directly with studying and researching your demographic. Who exactly are you trying to appeal to? Do they know what you mean when you say, “xHTML/CSS Standards Compliant”? By using jargon, you are limiting yourself only to those who know what it means. Solution? Why not offer a glossary, or even break down the jargon and not use it?

Once again, it’s important that you realize who your demographic is and what sort of product/service/brand you want to push onto them. Will they understand what you have to say, or do you have to completely break it down? Sometimes it seems easier just to use jargon, but remember that not everyone knows what it means, and you could be talking to a tree stump.

Blog Monetization

My plan has always been to build the base of my blog before worrying about monetizing it and as such I have not put much effort into the monetization piece of it until recently. I decided to give it a go for February and start trying to introduce some private ad sales and a few other sources of income. I am far from where I expect to end up but happy overall with my first real month of effort.

If you consider these two revelations, that people like income reports and I am starting to earn income from my blog then it would only make sense that I will start providing an income report. It goes against my nature and I am not sure that I will continue them in the future but we’ll see how it goes.

Google is ready to invest in China

Kai-Fu Lee, president of Google China, reported that Google will acquire "one or two companies" in the country and invest in up to five more in the coming year. While the specific companies were not named in the report, the acquisitions/partnerships are thought to be a part of the search company's ongoing efforts to unseat rival Baidu.com as the country's leader in internet search. A (U.S.-based) Google representative told Wired News he couldn't confirm Lee's comments due to the time difference in Beijing. A statement is expected on Monday.

Web Developer - Other than View Source and those functions, Web Developer is great for getting image information like size etc. If a site is making it hard to get access to their images, use the View Image Information button to get all the images and their links. Respect copyright.

Snagit - to use with the SnagIt image capture application, this extension just makes it easy to start grabbing screenshots while still in Firefox.

Picnik - this web based app trumps SnagIt in many respects. With the Picnik extension you can grab a screenshot of the visible page, or the entire page, with one click. The same goes with any images on the web, including a button at Flickr.com.

Picnik is also a very good image editor. I don’t use anything else to edit images for articles. You can take any photo, from your computer, Flickr or Picasso account, or anywhere on the web, and start editing without downloading anything to your computer.

I've found an official release from Google concering the Pagerank update. We all know that Google Pagerank Update is delayed so i thaught everybody is interested in this.

"It has come to our attention that there is a widespread outbreak of concerned webmasters talking about the future of the Google PageRank system. The delay
as many have called it of the PageRank update is nothing of the sort. There are certain circumstances that have caused the present update to take longer to propagate than past updates.

New search engine algorithm changes are taking place which have affected the PageRank update. We recommend that all webmasters and website visitors in general continue on with business as usual. The PageRank update will occur when the new algorithm changes are fully functional and pass quality assurance checks.

On a side note the new algorithm changes consist of new filters to block automated spam websites. We are also focusing on websites that blatantly sell text links with the sole intention of boosting a specific websites PageRank. There are several factors that will be used to help us determine if a website is selling text links to boost the linked websites PageRank. News Corp. said its Fox Interactive unit, which largely consists of MySpace, turned a profit of $10 million on revenue of $550 million for the fiscal year ending June 30.

News Corp. chief financial officer David DeVoe said the revenue figures exceeded the company’s internal benchmarks. News Corp. had projectedMySpace revenue to top $500 million this fiscal year. The results include revenue from MySpace’s deal with Googleto monetize search results. DeVoe said that Fox Interactive is expected to benefit more from the Google deal in fiscal 2008. Officials said that Fox Interactive as a whole should be able to approach annual revenue of about $1 billion. This growth would come from the Google search deal, international growth on the Web and better monetization. News Corp. is also benefiting as advertisers flock to social sites at the expense of portals.

“It wasn’t so long ago–24 months–when many thought we were embarking on a fool’s errand (with MySpace),” said News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch.
