iPhone unlocking

This is getting a little bit ridiculous. Every week, a new service or process seems to emerge offering full unlocking for your iPhone. The problem, at least until now, is that the unlocking has been either too complicated, too time consuming, or too "located in Hong Kong." iPhone-Sim-Free claims to do away with all of that nastiness, offering what they claim to be "the worlds first (and only) software driven sim unlocking service for the iPhone(tm)." Sounds pretty straightforward to us. Their company is currently offering 3 free unlocks to "top press" prior to releasing the beta version of their software sometime within the next 48 hours. These dudes don’t play. We’re excited to see where this goes, and it looks like we’ll get a pretty good look. Stay tuned for more info as it surfaces.

Midomi allows you to search for music with your voice

Are you one of those closet Karaoke freaks? Do you think that you can belt out a version of "I Will Always Love You" better than Whitney herself? Or do you simply have a song stuck in your head? Whatever the case, Midomi is trying to cover that. This new online service allows you to search for music by simply humming a few bars of that devil song. The service employs MARS (Multimodal Adaptive Recognition System), allowing you to sing a little somethin’ into your computer’s built in mic, and get a matching song in return. Sound dope? We think so, though repeatedly singing "I could make a mil’ sayin’ nothing on the track" produced results of varied success. If you get tired of searching for those long lost songs, Midomi also gives you the option of recording and sharing your very own renditions of classic tracks. Virtual Karaoke, what?

Google is ready to invest in China

Kai-Fu Lee, president of Google China, reported that Google will acquire "one or two companies" in the country and invest in up to five more in the coming year. While the specific companies were not named in the report, the acquisitions/partnerships are thought to be a part of the search company's ongoing efforts to unseat rival Baidu.com as the country's leader in internet search. A (U.S.-based) Google representative told Wired News he couldn't confirm Lee's comments due to the time difference in Beijing. A statement is expected on Monday.

In the past, Google (or ‘Guge,’ what is to be its Chinese name brand) has made no secret of its plans for China. In fact, CEO and president Eric Schmidt said his company is off to a pretty good start already, and that "the tenacity of Google…will bring significant victories in China over the next few years."

Buying and Selling ads a new program

Buying and selling ads without the middleman

When selling link and text ads on your site you have 2 options sell ads privately or use an agency such as linkworth, textlink ads or PPP. Their are benefits too both ways of selling advertising space on your website.

Benefits of using a middleman

Using an agency or middleman means you don't have the hassles of trying to find advertisers, telling them about your site, negotiating the price and then looking after them when they keep emailing you to say their links aren't there and THEY ARE THERE.

Ad Agencies

Selling ads using a middle man means you might have to sell them slightly cheaper, all publishers sell ads at a slightly lower price to agencies even large newspapers and TV Channels they don't have the costs involved with trying to find ad buyers. Rupert Murdoch would sell you an ad cheaper if you were an agency.

17 Firefox Extensions That Make Blogging Easy

Collecting

Google Notebook - Highlight the content you want to save, Note it with this extension. You can organize different ‘notebooks’ with their own sections. Each note will have a link back to the original website.

Session Manager - Great for doing research and rounding up a few sources. Save the session of tabs so you can come back to them later.

coComment - Keep tracks of comments you’ve left on other websites. This is particularly useful if the comment section is providing more resources than the actual post content.

Speak It - Have articles read out to you so you can do the dishes while researching. Not to be used while at the computer - speed reading = productivity. This extension uses the Microsoft TTS Engine.

DocuFarm - This is a cool extension that previews word, PDFs etc within Firefox. It comes with a search, which you can also use to search PDFs!

Writing

Scribefire - Performancing.com’s popular split-browser blog editor. Multiple blog management, categories and simple source editing. FTP Uploads are available but buggy. No good image support.

Deepest Sender - Very similar to ScribeFire, these two extensions lack greater features like image uploading, time-stamp editing and compatible tagging. Both are very easy to set up.

Resizable Text Area - If you stick with your regular blog editor, such as Wordpress, this extension comes in handy to resize the text area quickly and freely.

Spellbound & Google Toolbar - Inline spell-check, ala Microsoft Word. Use the extension or Google Toolbar’s built-in spell-checker. Both work great. Superseded by Firefox 2’s built in spell check.

Tabinta - turns the Tab Button to a text editor spacing tab rather than cycling through the web forms. Only interacts with the text area, otherwise does the regular Firefox tabbing.

Split Browser - Great when copy and pasting content and URLs, this extension makes it easy to split any tab any which way. Put your editor in a ’sidebar’ and continue surfing the other tabs in the other pane.

Copy Plain Text - This is a can’t-live-without extension for me. When I copy text, I don’t want any of the original site’s formating, links or text-link-ads to be copied over as well. Just the text. That’s what this extension does.

Copy As HTML Link - Use this extension in conjunction with Copy Plain Text to create links for your posts. Only make links when you want with the text you want.

Images

Web Developer - Other than View Source and those functions, Web Developer is great for getting image information like size etc. If a site is making it hard to get access to their images, use the View Image Information button to get all the images and their links. Respect copyright.

Snagit - to use with the SnagIt image capture application, this extension just makes it easy to start grabbing screenshots while still in Firefox.

Picnik - this web based app trumps SnagIt in many respects. With the Picnik extension you can grab a screenshot of the visible page, or the entire page, with one click. The same goes with any images on the web, including a button at Flickr.com.

Picnik is also a very good image editor. I don’t use anything else to edit images for articles. You can take any photo, from your computer, Flickr or Picasso account, or anywhere on the web, and start editing without downloading anything to your computer.

Google Pagerank Update - latest news

I've found an official release from Google concering the Pagerank update. We all know that Google Pagerank Update is delayed so i thaught everybody is interested in this.

"It has come to our attention that there is a widespread outbreak of concerned webmasters talking about the future of the Google PageRank system. The delay
as many have called it of the PageRank update is nothing of the sort. There are certain circumstances that have caused the present update to take longer to propagate than past updates.

New search engine algorithm changes are taking place which have affected the PageRank update. We recommend that all webmasters and website visitors in general continue on with business as usual. The PageRank update will occur when the new algorithm changes are fully functional and pass quality assurance checks.

On a side note the new algorithm changes consist of new filters to block automated spam websites. We are also focusing on websites that blatantly sell text links with the sole intention of boosting a specific websites PageRank. There are several factors that will be used to help us determine if a website is selling text links to boost the linked websites PageRank. Websites that are flagged for selling text links will receive an immediate drop in PageRank viewable by the Google PageRank tool bar, search engine rankings will suffer and the website will be removed from our index. Most live websites that are currently going to be effected by this have already realized at least two of the penalties above. Services that offer a fee to review a website based on it's content will not be penalized for doing so as it helps the indexing process.

We recommend that you follow the Google webmaster guidelines to prevent your website from being penalized."

$10 million profit to myspace.com

News Corp. said its Fox Interactive unit, which largely consists of MySpace, turned a profit of $10 million on revenue of $550 million for the fiscal year ending June 30.

News Corp. chief financial officer David DeVoe said the revenue figures exceeded the company’s internal benchmarks. News Corp. had projectedMySpace revenue to top $500 million this fiscal year. The results include revenue from MySpace’s deal with Googleto monetize search results. DeVoe said that Fox Interactive is expected to benefit more from the Google deal in fiscal 2008. Officials said that Fox Interactive as a whole should be able to approach annual revenue of about $1 billion. This growth would come from the Google search deal, international growth on the Web and better monetization. News Corp. is also benefiting as advertisers flock to social sites at the expense of portals.

“It wasn’t so long ago–24 months–when many thought we were embarking on a fool’s errand (with MySpace),” said News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch.
